Building Crush: Royal Festival Hall
My love affair with the Royal Festival Hall intensified last night because believe it or not, despite being a Londoner born and bred, I’ve never actually been to an event there.
It’s always been one of my favourite buildings in London, in fact all of Southbank is, but last night I saw it with fresh eyes and a renewed admiration for the team that created it including my two of my design heroes Robin and Lucienne Day.
I was there with friends to see Ocean Colour Scene (remember them?!) but what really blew me away wasn’t the music but the interior.
From the beautiful wood panelling and awe inspiring organ to the seats, which I would gladly have in my own home, to the famous Net & Ball carpet in the bar area, this building is the reason why I’m so obsessed with Brutalist architecture and mid-century style.
